Two nights before the lecture he dreamed, knowing he was dreaming, that the Germans and Japanese as self-styled master races had taken over his area; a German soldier tried to humiliate him, questioned him in several languages, and on hearing he was born in Barbados called him a Negro; he was marched past a mulatto lineman who knew him as his superior but dared not greet him as Mr. Neville, and brought before a tribunal which sentenced him to physical torture — whereupon he opened his spiritual eye, vanished from them, and woke on his bed laughing.
