A 25-year-old black man named Samuel Muskowitz, employed by a rabbi to write Torah scrolls, was arraigned before Magistrate Meade in the Essex Market court on a disorderly-conduct charge after a crowd gathered around him speaking Hebrew. Interpreter Schwartz and lawyer Coben testified he was a Hebrew who spoke no English; the report states there were about 300 such black Hebrews in New York, all said to have come from Jerusalem. The magistrate discharged him for want of evidence.
