S. D. Lanyon and other relatives received a collection of war trophies from Walter Lanyon, then with the Eighty-ninth Division in France: a German gas mask, a German steel helmet still carrying battlefield mud, a soldier's match box, yellow and blue German signal flags, a sample of burlap from a German officers' dugout, a burlap laundry bag, and a bravery citation taken off a dead German officer. The collection was exhibited at the Jackson Drug store, Carthage. A letter from Lanyon to his brother, dated 21 October 1918 and printed by the Carthage paper (node:4281, media:1674), closes: 'I hope you received your helmets which I sent some days ago, and [am] going to try to get you a camouflaged one which will give you an idea of how far the craze really went.' Whether those helmets are this collection is not established — that letter is to his brother, and speaks of helmets in the plural, while this record has a single steel helmet reaching S. D. Lanyon and other relatives — but it shows Lanyon shipping this kind of material home in the same weeks, and it supplies a probable ceiling of 21 October 1918 for at least one such consignment. The camouflaged helmet he says he hoped to obtain is not among the items recorded here.
