The musical comedy 'Oh, Milly, Wait a Minute', written and directed by Walter C. Lanyon, was staged at Carney Hall auditorium for two nights ('tonight and tomorrow night'). The Security Benefit Association had the play staged, with proceeds going to the Good Fellows Christmas Basket fund, hoped to be sufficient to meet a deficiency in the Good Fellows treasury. An advance notice for this run (node:4286, media:1693), headed '"MILLY" TO MAKE HER BOW TOMORROW NIGHT', records how it was put together. Intensive training of the Normal students and other local players began the day before the notice appeared, when Walter C. Lanyon, the play's writer and director, arrived in town; the Security Benefit Association expected the entertainment to yield a substantial sum to the Good Fellows' fund. On the casting: the leading role was to have been played by Miss Doris Melvin, but as she was singing a major role in the opera 'Martha' at the senior high school, Miss Edna Lautaret of Monett was expected to take the part of Milly instead — the notice remarking that Miss Lautaret 'is of French descent and is well fitted for the role [of] Milly, who is a French orphan and a Paris vamp'. Other players would probably be brought in from out of town for roles it was impossible to train local talent for in the short time available. Being an advance notice, this records who was expected to appear rather than who did. The notice also dates the earlier Monett production to 17 December, and so places this run after that date.
