A letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, signed 'Rached Ben Aobi, Brooklyn, February 15, 1915' and headed 'Tells of Black Jews - Were Descendants of a People of Jacob's Time', responds to a Jewish Review piece (5 February) by Rabbi Krass and Dr. Feitlovitch on black Jews in Africa, and notes that 'some years ago' one of these black Jews had himself been in Brooklyn and caused interest in Jewish religious circles. The letter gives a traditional/theological account: that these black Jews descend from African slaves owned by Abraham who became Jews in religion (but not by blood) through Abraham's covenant, did not remain with the Israelites through the Egyptian persecution, migrated further into Africa, kept up trade with Israel, may have told the Queen of Sheba of Solomon's glory, follow the Law of Moses without the Talmud or Prophets, and hold some of the Koran and part of the New Testament Gospels; it notes the kings of Abyssinia claim descent from Solomon, a Sudanese tribe claims descent from Moses, and that one of Moses' wives was Ethiopian.
