A position in the American Express Company's Paris office was secured by Walter Lanyon, described by the Carthage paper as a 'well known Carthage young man'. A letter just received by his parents stated that he had gone to work in 'Gay Paree' and that he liked the place immensely. His work with the company was that of stenographer. The post was secured for him by an official of the American Express Company for whom he had previously done work. He had been visiting relatives in England before taking it. Of the office itself the paper reports: 'The Paris branch is an elegantly fitted up place, and its main object is to cater to the American tourists, of whom great numbers are to be found there at all hours the place is open.' He intended to stay in Paris until spring, when he expected to return to the United States. In the event he sailed for home on the Celtic on 6 June 1912 (hist_event 20154), which also records this winter in Paris in passing. This employment sits between the railroad office in Chicago that he left to sail for Europe (hist_event 20203) and his return home in June 1912.
