Neville recounts his 1934 voyage home to New York after three months in Barbados, a trip he had made at his brother Victor's unexpected written request. On the ship north he fell back into old habits, drinking and smoking again after months of abstinence, and he ties the lapse to a warning Abdullah had given him before he left: that only after proving the law would he 'come out of that graveyard' of forced holiness.
