Neville's father was born poor in Barbados and, with Neville's mother, raised twelve children (two died at birth, ten survived). After Neville's mother died in 1941 he never remarried, saying he had been too happily married to her. Starting with nothing, he built a fortune and, when he died in 1959 at the age of eighty-five, left each of his ten children independently wealthy. Neville retells the story repeatedly as proof that a single sustained assumption -- his father's determination to provide for his family -- can be brought to pass regardless of the poverty of the starting position.
