Neville says that his own conscious memory reaches back no further than about the age of three. He uses this limit to make a point about the imagination reaching further than memory: though born in 1905 with no notable background, he and a friend born in 1911 could each identify by experience with the 'Son' who supposedly lived a thousand years before Christ -- a reach the mere personal memory of either man could never achieve on its own.
