Neville recalls one of his own mystical experiences from his youth: shortly after turning twenty, he found himself immersed in what he calls an infinite sea of liquid light, and knew himself to be identical with it -- the experience he ties to Christ's words 'I am the Light of the world.' He notes the irony that this, chronologically his earliest such experience, corresponds to the last of the mystical states Mark's gospel records, while his most recent experience (a vision of the descending dove, on the first of that January) corresponds to Mark's earliest.
