The month before this lecture, Neville visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see Rembrandt's painting of Aristotle contemplating the head of Homer, valued at a million and a half dollars and roped off five feet from viewers under guard. In the same gallery he saw crucifixion paintings valued in the hundreds of thousands, and criticized their inaccurate placement of the stigmata and their uniformly sorrowful expressions -- insisting that the crucifixion is a drama he has personally experienced within himself, and that its true recurrence is not sorrow but an ecstasy beyond words.
