Neville describes a telephone call he received that same morning from a female friend, deeply upset over what she had done. Though the kind of person who would not harm even a butterfly, she had long wanted money above all else and had now received it -- a sum placed in trust for the rest of her life, apparently arising from the deaths of two people whose children would now be cared for. Neville comforts her, and uses the moment to urge her to want spiritual fulfillment of the Promise as intensely as she had once wanted money.
