Neville recalls that his first mystical experiences came through the ocean, beginning when he was a boy of about five or six: at night he would somehow know in advance that something was about to happen and would sit up in bed in fear. These recurring ocean-related experiences continued through his childhood until puberty, after which a different kind of experience -- an 'ocean of light' -- began instead, first occurring the night he turned twenty.
