Neville describes what he calls his pre-birth 'sifting' -- a spiritual separation, like wheat from chaff, that he says happened before he was born on Barbados in 1905. He ties this to the restlessness that marked his boyhood there, in a home with no social, intellectual or financial advantage, including one severe schoolboy beating for failing to produce a Bible he did not own, and to the lifelong search that eventually carried him across the ocean and into his teaching.
