A woman in Neville's audience wrote to him the day before this lecture, describing a mystical awakening: she felt a tremendous blow to the head like a hammer striking steel, then saw the sun and all the world's traffic seem to move within her before the vision subsided into ordinary street noise. Since then, she wrote, everything she sees, whether her eyes are open or shut, appears in vivid color, and she sometimes steps into another world entirely while going about ordinary daily tasks like washing dishes or taking a walk.
