Neville uses his own apartment, where he says he has lived for six years, to illustrate what constitutes a spiritual 'home': not simply a fixed physical space he sometimes leaves for months at a time, but whatever place -- or state of consciousness -- a person returns to most constantly. Just as his apartment remains available to him whenever he comes back, he teaches that the state one habitually returns to in imagination is one's true home, regardless of how often or how far one wanders from it.
