Neville tells his audience that he and his wife had seen a play together the week before. He uses the memory as the springboard for an illustration: imagining that he comes home and invites the entire cast to supper, so that as each guest arrives and his wife greets them, every one — the author, the hero, the villain, the accused, the judge, even the stagehand, carpenter, lighting man and soundman — answers her "who are you?" by first declaring "I am God" before naming the mask he wears in the play. It illustrates his core teaching that the one I AM plays every part in the drama of life.
