He was in a room teaching the word of God to twelve men in ancient robes; one rose and left, and Neville knew instantly the man intended to betray him to the authorities. A tall, imposing robed figure then entered, hammered a wooden peg into Neville's shoulder, cut away his robe's sleeve with a sharp instrument, and embraced him with arms outstretched like a cross, kissing him on the neck as Neville kissed him in return. He reads the vision as a living enactment of the Gospel of Mark's betrayal scene, reinterpreting Judas not as a traitor but as "the revealer" of the drama that unfolds within every man.
