Neville recounts a vision of a “fragmented rock” he had in 1934, during the depths of the Depression, while living alone in a basement apartment on 75th Street in New York City and working as a dancer with no income. The vision showed him that all people—regardless of race, nation, or skin color—are fragments of one underlying unity. He connects it to a Robert Graves verse about love restoring “fragmentation into true unity” and to the biblical image of the Rock (Deuteronomy 32; 1 Corinthians 10), which he identifies as Christ within.
