Neville recounts a recent visit to a race track with friends. As they were leaving, a man approached the lawyer friend who had driven them, trying to sell a watch he claimed was worth one hundred fifty dollars for twenty-five, while pointing to a nearby car as though it were his own -- though the friend spotted a Turf Club parking sticker behind its glass, giving the lie away. Neville uses the small swindle as a contrast to his father's lifelong refusal to take advantage of another for personal gain even in fierce competition.
