Neville describes a visionary experience from back in the early 1930s in which he found himself confronted by two beings: above, a glorious, angelic divine woman, and below, a monstrous hairy creature, ape-like but able to speak, which called the woman 'my mommy.' When he struck the creature it only gloated and grew stronger, feeding on the violence. He came to realize both figures were his own offspring — the woman embodying every noble and lovely thing he had ever done, the monster embodying his misspent and unlovely energies, sustained only by the existence he himself continued to give it.
