Taught by Abdullah to imagine himself already living in Barbados, Neville grew impatient as October gave way to November with no sign of a way to get there. At the end of November he told Abdullah plainly, 'I am no nearer Barbados than I was when I spoke to you,' only to be told again 'You are in Barbados' -- after which Abdullah turned his back, walked into his bedroom, and slammed the door rather than argue further, a rebuff Neville later understood as a deliberate lesson in faith. Days later, just before the last ship of the season sailed for Barbados on 6 December, a letter and a small money order arrived unbidden from his brother Victor, resolving the very problem he had been forbidden to discuss.
