The preacher spent the first fifteen or twenty minutes soliciting donations and promoting his father-in-law's book, while the father-in-law took the microphone in turn to promote him, before either got to any scriptural message. Neville contrasts this outward, money-driven religion -- pointing to a God 'on the outside' -- with the true God found only within, quoting the Irish mystic AE's wish that rain would fall on a convention of priests in Dublin.
