On the afternoon of this lecture, Neville received a phone call from Louise telling him that his brother Joseph had just died suddenly in her arms of a ruptured aorta, at the age of seventy-seven. Joseph had lived a full, worldly life as a couturier with factories in New York, Paris, and Puerto Rico, uninterested in spiritual matters to the end, and left his fortune to Louise and their son, Neville's young namesake.
