A friend wrote Neville a letter that week describing a disturbing vision she had on the morning of Monday, 14 February: she found herself lying flat on the ground, stretched out like a cross and bound in chains, then saw a serpent emerging fully from its shed skin, followed by two serpents -- one white, one black -- merging into a single serpent, white above and black below. Neville read her letter as confirmation of the eighth chapter of John and built that night's lecture around it.
