Neville recounts a mystical vision in which his skull seems to explode and he beholds David, with the severed head of Goliath before him; through the vision his "memory returns" and he recognizes that the story of David and the 40th Psalm was really written about himself, not a historical other. In framing the story he places its composition at roughly a thousand years before Christ.
