Neville's explanation of why Jesus does not answer Pilate, and the principle he uses to keep two incompatible tests of truth in play at once. Truth is an infinite, an ever-increasing illumination, so the question what is truth cannot be answered on any one level to the satisfaction of the whole definition. On the level of Pilate, which is reason, a true judgment must conform to the external reality to which it relates: I say I am rich, you investigate, the facts say otherwise, and my judgment is false. On the level of the one who bears witness, the word is whatever you desire, when you pray, believe you have received it, and you will - a judgment that does not conform to any external fact and is tested only by whether it proves itself in performance. Neville's crucial qualification is that the levels do not cancel: what holds good here will not be denied on a higher level but will be incorporated, though what is true here may simply not exist there. He gives the example - on a higher level he could stand suspended in the air, hold everything in motion still, and rearrange it, with no concept of gravity. So the lower truth is never refuted, only outgrown. About twelve lectures, and it is the nearest thing in the corpus to an epistemology.
