Leviticus 19:18 as Jesus quotes it in Mark 12, and Neville's objection to the ordinary reading is that it makes the second commandment an analogy when it is a statement of fact. Don't just love him as you love yourself - love him because you are the very being that you think to be other than yourself. He grounds it in the first commandment, to which the second is said to be equal: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord - which he renders I AM, our I AMs, is one I AM, a compound unity. On this level God is fragmented, and every being is saying I am, yet there is only one I AM; so the neighbour is a fragment of the same being, and the command is not to extend a courtesy but to recognise an identity. The practical form is blunt: someone in your world is not as you think they ought to be - don't argue with them, don't discard them from your life, because it's yourself; don't cut off a finger. He also gives the point at which the scribe who asked is told he is not far from the kingdom: when the man repeats back that the Lord is one and that this command outweighs all the sacrifices. About five lectures, and it is the only place where the ethics of the corpus are derived rather than recommended.
