Neville takes four hundred as a letter: Tau, the twenty-second and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, numerical value four hundred, whose symbol is a cross. So the sentence is not a span of time but an object - the body. This is the cross on which Jesus Christ is crucified, not any wooden cross; the oppression lasts as long as the man wears the cross of the flesh. Two consequences he draws every time. First, the land that is not theirs is this world, so the whole race is in Egypt now and not once. Second, the great possessions are not a reward but an identity - we possess not only the kingdom, we possess the King, we possess a presence and the presence is God.
