John 7:16 and 14:24, in about ten lectures (1108, 1134, 1269, 1449, 1539, 1829, 1923, 1963 among them), and Neville uses it for the one thing he cannot claim for himself. He is not reporting an opinion and not offering a philosophy; the words are not his. It sits inside the sequence of I AM sayings - I am the way, I am the truth, I am the life - and it is what keeps that sequence from being a boast: the speaker who says I am the truth in the same breath says the words are not mine. The second half of the saying is the part he presses, because it explains why the teaching fails: if you do not believe my words when I tell you of things of the earth, how could you believe me if I tell you things of heaven? So he tells them the things of earth - the law, the revision, the assumption - and when those are not received he does not move on to the promise. The motif is therefore his standing answer to being disbelieved, and it doubles as his defence against the charge of self-advertisement; keep it beside M1062. PROVENANCE. Coined out of sequence at the request of the attach lane, which found the passages while attaching other motifs and reported that nothing in the catalogue held them.
