John 1:18 used to solve a problem Neville’s whole teaching creates: if God is Spirit and a man is to discover he is God, what could possibly show him? The verse answers that nothing can be seen and that one thing can be known, and the knowing is done by the Son. It takes the Son to reveal the Father (1239); the Son reveals you to yourself (1053). The argument is short and always the same. You cannot see your own face; God is Spirit and has no face to be seen; so the only evidence of fatherhood available in the world is a son who calls you Father. He gives us the only thing in this world that could ever prove to man that he’s God: he gives us his Son. That is why David matters in the corpus at all — the relation, not the figure, is the proof, and at 1053 it is stated as the only symbol in the world that could convince a man he’s one with God. The word bosom is glossed at 1272 — it simply means within, in both Greek and Hebrew — and at 1053 it is located: your own wonderful human Imagination, which explodes and gives out the Son. That is the join with Blake’s line about the imagination ever expanding in the bosom of God [ever-expanding-in-the-bosom-of-god], and 1272 is the lecture where Neville makes the join himself. It is frequently paired with Matthew 11:27 / Luke 10:22 (no one knows who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal it) — so at 1028 and 1035, and at 1242 with the warning of Mark 13 against anyone who points at a Christ outside. At 1091 he insists the first eighteen verses of John are not a prologue but the revelation itself.
