Blake’s line, normally quoted inside his statement of task — I rest not from my great task, to open the eternal worlds, to open the immortal eyes of man inward into the worlds of thought, into Eternity, ever expanding in the bosom of God, the human Imagination — and used by Neville for a single purpose: to give the word bosom a location. The line does the work of an equation. If eternity is ever expanding in the bosom of God, and that which is ever expanding is the human Imagination, then the bosom is the human Imagination, and everything scripture says happens in the bosom of the Father happens there. At 1053 he asks the question straight out — well, where is that bosom? — and answers it, then has the bosom explode and give out David. At 1272 the same join is made from the other side, with the word glossed (bosom simply means within, in both Greek and Hebrew) and the beloved disciple resting on it brought in as the same interiority. The second use is directional. The eyes to be opened are in-current: you are going to see inwards into the world of thought (1134), and the Western gate in man is closed, so the immortal senses are closed (1185). At 1234 it is paired with Blake’s other reversal — the circumference is within you; it’s the selfish centre that is without — and the conclusion drawn that there is no circumference at all, because it is ever expanding. At 1487 he takes Blake’s task as his own and reports discharging it: I gave my eyes to her and she will share them spiritually with others. COUNT: mine and provisional — the phrase ever expanding in the bosom of God appears in about eighteen lectures, and the opening clause about the great task in four (1185, 1440, 1885, 2011), so the bosom line travels on its own far more often than the whole passage does.
