Abdullah’s formula for persistence, built out of the same verb in three tenses and closed with a condition rather than a date. Neville gives it as a quotation and then translates it into his own terms in the same passage: so I will assume that I am that which I want to be. I’m still assuming that I am it. I will continue to assume that I am it until what I have and still am assuming is externalized and is expressed. What the triple tense does is remove the question the technique always attracts — how long, and how often. The formula makes the past act, the present state and the future intention one continuous act, so there is nothing to repeat and nothing to check. The clause I haven’t forgotten what I willed is the whole of the maintenance. In 1053 it is placed immediately after I don’t do anything beyond that, which is its function: it describes what doing nothing consists of. The same three-tense sentence is used twice more with the verb changed, which is what makes it a formula rather than a saying. At 1816 it is imagining — I’ve imagined it so to be, I’m still imagining it so to be, and I will continue to imagine it so to be until what I have imagined is perfectly expressed — and it is offered there as the way to know what divine foreknowledge is, tied to Jeremiah (he will not turn back until he has executed and accomplished the intents of his mind). At 1209 it is seeing — I saw it, I am seeing it, I will continue to see it until what I am seeing is perfectly expressed — and it answers James 1:25, the man who looks into the perfect law and perseveres rather than turning away and becoming a forgetful hearer.
