The hardest of the mask formulas, and the one Neville states without any softening: what is behind the mask is not a better self, not a brother, not a representative of God, but God. There is nothing but God. The mechanism is always the same sentence and it is almost word for word identical at 1502 and 2036: Divine Imagination reproduced himself in you as your human imagination; and because Divine Imagination contains all, everything is contained in the human imagination. From that the world-is-yourself-pushed-out conclusion follows immediately, and it is given twice over — the whole vast world is yourself pushed out as the whole vast world is God pushed out. The face is where it bites. At 1518 he looks at the audience and says it to them: looking at you, even though it’s a mask, behind you is the Father, and He resembles you — only you raised to the nth degree. The present face, disfigured or perfect, is called a shadow and set against a face that cannot be compared to it. At 1536 the being behind the mask is named the Ancient of Days; at 3957 it is named Jesus Christ; at 2044 it is put as a way of seeing rather than a doctrine — I am looking only at God masked as I look at you — and the whole thing is done by God to Himself. At 1972 it is derived from the word itself: the thing in the mirror is a mask, that is persona, and the answer to who wears it is I am, which he calls his real name against Neville, which he calls the mask. At 2137 it is given its social use, which is the only place the formula becomes advice: let no one pull any rank, for all ranks are only states of consciousness — the king and the court jester are played by the same being, and that court jester may be nearer to apostleship. BOUNDARY. [we-are-all-brothers-behind-the-masks] draws the HORIZONTAL conclusion from the same image (behind that mask he is my brother, there is nothing but brotherhood); this motif draws the VERTICAL one (behind that mask is the Father, and He is God). They are siblings and they often appear together, but they are not the same claim and a passage that says only one should not be attached to both. Distinct also from [god-is-a-protean-being] (which form God chooses for the one who sees him) and from [assume-the-mask] (a mask put on deliberately as a technique). Coined out of sequence at the request of the attach lane, which found the passages while attaching other motifs and reported that nothing in the catalogue held them.
