A name-gloss used as a proof of the descent, and one of the cleanest pieces of reasoning in the corpus because the whole argument is a tense. The prophet’s name means Jehovah will rise; a future tense implies a present condition; therefore Jehovah has fallen and is asleep in the man who bears the name. At 1511 it is put exactly so — which implies in his name that he is asleep and has not yet been awakened. At 1515 the conclusion is stated without hedging: it is Jehovah who is buried in you. Jehovah will rise. 1130 adds the etymology that supplies the fall. The verb behind the divine name, He Vau He, is said to have meant in its original form to fall, or to cause to fall; to blow, or to cause the wind to blow — so the name we translate I AM contains both the falling and the wind, which is how this gloss connects to the wind of John 3:8 elsewhere in the corpus. The other tellings extend the name rather than contradict it. 1165 gives three definitions together — Jehovah hurls; Jehovah will rise; Jehovah will loosen the womb — and then reports all three as fulfilled: he did rise in me; and he rose in me and he loosened the womb, of that womb that was really a tomb. 1502 and 2036 use it to carry the claim of Jeremiah 15:16, that a man is called by the name of the Lord, God of hosts. 1511 and 2137 use it to introduce the potter of Jeremiah 18, where the point is that the spoiled vessel is reworked and not discarded, and 2137 draws the conclusion the gloss exists for: he’ll rise in you as you, because he is you.
