Acts 13:22, where Paul quotes God as saying of David, I have found a man after my own heart. Neville uses it as the hinge between the two halves of the David material: the heart is what God sees (1 Samuel 16:7, quoted a few sentences earlier in this lecture), so the man after God’s own heart is the one God can see and therefore the one he chooses; and because David is the Son who calls you Father, the man after God’s own heart turns out to be you. At 1832 the identification is made without a gap: so here he sees a man after his own heart; and so, you behold David (you are he). David is his Son, yet you are his father. It arrives in this lecture directly out of the rejection of Eliab, which is what makes the reading work: seven sons are marched past and rejected for their outward appearance, then the one who is chosen is described by his heart. And it is followed at once by the scope of David — David symbolizes the whole vast world of humanity, and he draws you out. CAUTION, and it is mine rather than the lane’s. The phrase occurs in about forty-four lectures by probe (20, 1021, 1051, 1063, 1072, 1079, 1085, 1106, 1140, 1166, 1177, 1186, 1277, 1306, 1316, 1332, 1333, 1349, 1361, 1408, 1445, 1462, 1474, 1478, 1513, 1517, 1530, 1766, 1788, 1825, 1830, 1832, 1867, 1886, 1916, 1978, 1997, 2181, 2190, 2269, 3952, 3957, 3978, 4428) and no motif held it, which is why it is coined; but I have read the reading only in 1832. **The other forty-three are unverified by me** — a lane attaching this should check whether the verse is always carrying the heart-is-what-God-sees argument or is sometimes only a quotation in passing, and should say so.
