Experiential narrative

Autobiographical story: in November 1933, unemployed in New York after twelve years away, Neville suddenly longed to go home to Barbados for Christmas. His teacher Abdullah told him 'You are in Barbados' and to walk as though he were there, refused to discuss how, and when Neville booked third class asked 'Who told you that you are going third class?' Neville walked New York as if on palm-lined Barbados streets and slept as though there; his brother Victor, thinking the idea his own, sent a letter, $50 and a ticket, and at the dock a cancellation put him in first class. Three heavenly months followed.

If you want to go Neville, you have gone
You do not say ‘how’ when you ‘are there’. You are there. Now you walk as though you were there
I have said all that I have to say
Who told you that you are going 3rd Class?
There has been a cancellation and you are going 1st Class
You are in Barbados, Neville. You want to be there; wherever you want to be, there you are. Live as though you are and that you shall be
I walked, feeling that I was actually walking the streets of Barbados
