Browning's lines from Paracelsus: 'Truth is within ourselves; it takes no rise from outward things, whate'er you may believe. There is an inmost centre in us all, where truth abides in fullness', and to know is to open a way for the imprisoned splendour to escape rather than to let in a light supposed to be without. In 1951 (quoted as 'an immortal center') the inner truth is governed by imaginative love; in the 1960s the inmost centre is the one within who says 'I am the truth'.
