A newspaperman told Neville that the scientist Robert Millikan, while still poor and unproven, condensed his dream of greatness and security into one statement implying it was already realized and repeated it until it filled his mind: 'I have a lavish, steady, dependable income, consistent with integrity and mutual benefit.' Not 'I will be', which implies one is not: the future dream made a present fact, in the first person, present tense.
