The 'I am' statements of John's Gospel (I am the way, the truth and the life; the door; the resurrection; the bread; the light; the vine) read as the speech of one's own I AM: always first person, present tense, and the only way, door or resurrection there is. Here 'I am the door' is the door of the present through which all time passes.
