John 3:14 ('As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up') with Numbers 21:8-9. Here the serpent is the symbol of endless self-reproduction, shedding its skin without dying: man lifts himself up by dying to what he believed and rising to the belief that he is what he wants to be, or that another is. In later lectures the serpent rises from within, from generation into regeneration.
