Case story: on a rainy Christmas Eve a seventeen-year-old waitress, grieving her father, rode a San Diego streetcar full of laughing students. Holding the rail, she told herself the rain was ocean spray, the salt of her tears the salt of the sea, and that she was on a ship coming into the Bay of Samoa, until she felt it real. Ten days later a Chicago firm wrote that an aunt had left her three thousand dollars; a month later she sailed into Samoa and felt the same spray and salt wind.

“This is not rain, why, this is spray from the ocean; and this is not the salt of tears that I taste, for this is the salt of the sea in the wind; and this is not San Diego, this is a ship, and I am coming into the Bay of Samoa.”
