Psychological interpretation

Genesis 28:12-13: the ladder set on earth whose top reaches heaven, angels ascending and descending on it and the Lord standing above it. Read as the ladder of consciousness down which man descended and up which he is to awaken, from the lowest rung to the highest, where God stands. Later lectures read it as the vertical line of infinite states crossing time, as Christ the mediator, and as the spine.
