John 15:14-15 ('Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants... but I have called you friends'), with Exodus 33:11, where the Lord speaks to Moses face to face as a man to his friend. Neville's stages of the relation to God: first the servant, who proves he can bring the desired state into being; then the friend, who communes face to face with the deep of himself; and at last the Son, when the seal is broken.
