Asked about the future of the animal world, Neville finds himself in vision at the top of a ladder above a jungle of snarling beasts that grow angrier as he grows afraid. He knows they are his own emotions externalised; losing his fear, he finds them docile as house cats, and arresting the activity within him he sees them turn to clay. The animal world is man's emotions made visible.
