The Ancients called the capacity the Western Gate and tied it to the sense of touch; it is closed in man, but it can be opened. Finding himself dreaming, one need not wake: the dream may be prolonged, and if one takes hold of something in it, feels it solidly real, and compels oneself to awaken while still holding it, one awakens in that world and not on one's bed. Neville's own experiment: swimming toward a primitive island, he held one of the decayed pilings, made himself awake, and waded ashore there, no more asleep in that sphere than here. The same law applied to this world is the whole technique: sit at the desk you would sit at, live in the house you want, hold to it in imagination and it is made real without.
