The seven locks shaved from Samson's head, the Philistines gouging out his eyes, Samson eyeless in Gaza and made to dance before the crowd; he asks to be placed where he may touch the two middle pillars, presses, pushes and pulls the whole thing down, and slays more Philistines than he had slain in all his life. Neville reads the whole story as symbolical of the capacity to touch: blinded to the outer world, the man who lays hold of the two pillars by feeling alone brings the entire structure down.
