Matthew 26 in Gethsemane - 'if it be possible, let this cup pass from me' and 'if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, thy will be done' - read through the root meaning of the word: cup means to imbibe, and he is called in the Bible the wine bibber, he who drains the cup. The cup is offered tonight, not two thousand years ago: whenever a man is seen as he should not be seen, one is confronted with the cup. Either the appearance is accepted and perpetuated, or it is imbibed to the fullest - one yields to the revised image and so lives by it that one sees the man as he should be. That is the cup you and I are called upon to drink, for ourselves or for a stranger; and there is no other way than the way of the cross.
