Isaiah 54:5 read as the mechanism of the second birth. God made man out of his very being - we are made from the very soul of God - and then, being both maker and husband, he sires his own image in the one he made, begetting his only begotten son in each of us forever. That is why the birth is self-begetting: the man is not the passive mother of the child but the Father who sired it, so that whoever holds the babe may ask, if I begot Jacob, am I not Isaac.
