The image is placed in a garden, Eden, and out of it comes a river that parts into four - but it is not actually water. The four rivers flowing out of Eden are the senses: sound and sight and touch and taste, by which a man waters his Eden. To realise a dream one must know the taste and touch and sight and sound of what it would be if it were true, and see what one would see if it were true; remaining faithful to that imagery makes it real in the world of shadows.
